Homeade from the Rose Family in Kingsford Michigan(U.P.)

My Parents where from the Iron Mountain/Kingsford Mich. area(in the U.P.), so growing up (1960's-1980's)we returned there every summer for vacation/visit and I recall watching for and stopping at several little pasty shops/huts/shacks along US Route 2(west)on the way to Grampas house, what a great memory ! each shop had there own little twist,But I must admit one of the BEST pasties I recall came from down the street from my Grampas house(309 Dorland,Kingsford,Mich.),there was a family with the last name Rose, they made pasties on the weekends to sell to the locals as I was told, The crust was very soft, flaky, golden brown, stuffed generously with meat and vegetables absolutely Perfect !,No disrespect to my Mother as she also made a pretty good pasty !, But those Rose family pasties took the prize !, thats my Pasty story. Best Pizza in Iron Mountain (Spuds)
by: Anonymous

I lived at 313 dorland st in Kingsford during the 60's, and remember the Roses also. When I am home in the summer I go to Spud's for the pizza. The best ever. I miss it when I am in Florida in the winter. I will definatly try the pasties this year.

Rose Family Tradition
by: Mariah Schewe

Thank you for posting this very nice article. Vernon and Fern took pride in baking and cooking. Throughout the years our family has always made pasties. There son Todd and daughter Sheila started pasty shops in the area and Shelia still has a pasty shop in town. "Spuds Bistro" If you ever come to Iron Mountain again, stop in and have a pasty. I'm sure you will still savor the flavor of the buttery crust and plump filling.....

Sincerely,
(a very proud pasty maker, taught by my grandma, Fern and mother, Lynn) Mariah Schewe

It was great to see this post! My grandpa Vernon's pasty recipe was the best! Nice to see he is not forgotten. :)

Cool article, what a suprise!
by: Keith Rose

Lynn - I hope you are doing well and the memories of the boys from Ohio will be forever implanted in my head as well. Mr Doehr was my favorite old neighbor and was sorely missed from Doralend when he passed. He was such a kind man! As many times as I have eaten pasties in my life, my father did have the best recipe and some of my brothers and sisters went on to sell them too. Spuds Bistro in Iron Mountain still sells them (sister Shiela).

Stop in and have one...phone first to be sure they are making them...they don't sell them everyday.

Best Regards to you and your family,

Keith
